Mayor denies Msunduzi ratepayers footed the bill for ANC victory bash

Celebrations and a joyous mood over the ANC’s victory following Wednesday’s elections were the order of the day in many parts of the country yesterday and Pietermaritzburg was no different.

However, the local bash was allegedly sponsored by Msunduzi Municipality ratepayers’ money.

Last night, a bash featuring South African kwaito stars Livovo Derango, Tizozo and Professor, Msawawa, Big Nuz, Bongi Dube, DJ Siyanda and others was held at the city’s Freedom Square Precinct in early celebration of an ANC victory.

Several callers told The Witness the bash was paid for by ratepayers through the Msunduzi mayor’s office, a claim rubbished by Mayor Zanele Hlatshwayo.

Sources who contacted The Witness alleged that the provincial and regional offices of the ANC were not party to the organising of the bash.

The ANC secretary-general in the Moses Mabhida region confirmed that his officer had not organised the bash.

Provincial ANC spokeswoman Nomfundo Mcetywa said that none of the provincial leaders indicated that they would attend the bash as they were busy monitoring the election results.

Mcetywa said that the bash was not organised by the ANC’s provincial office.

Hlatshwayo denied the bill for the bash was footed by her office.

She said the proposal for the bash emanated from young people during an IDP/draft budget imbizo held in Caluza in Edendale on Monday.

She said the youth wanted to celebrate the victory of the ANC.

“Not a cent from the municipality went to the organising and staging of the bash.

“The only contribution from the municipality was the booking of the venue for the bash,” said Hlatshwayo.

The money to pay for the bash was received through donations and fundraising, she added.
