Mayor may be named this week

THE new Msunduzi mayor is expected to be announced before the end of the week.

According to sources, two members of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, Mike Tarr and Makhosi Khoza, who is a former deputy mayor of the embattled municipality, have been tipped to replace recalled mayor Zanele Hlatshwayo.

The sources said Khoza is generally preferred as the new mayor.

However, some sources said Khoza has turned down her proposed deployment because she prefers to remain in provincial government.

Other sources said Khoza is the preferred candidate because she has a strong grasp of local government and is in the best position to turn around the municipality.

Tarr is not completely out of the picture, sources say, because his impending retirement from the legislature next month makes him a likely candidate to replace Hlatshwayo.

Tarr is a former Inkatha Freedom Party MPL who crossed the floor to the ANC.

According to the sources, none of the Msunduzi councillors is being considered for the mayor’s post as most of the mess happened on their watch.

They said that the only candidates being considered are those who have no ties with the municipality.

ANC provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala said the party’s provincial working committee has yet to meet to discuss the municipality’s future, among other matters.

“The ANC is not an issue-driven organisation. We will meet according to our normal process and will announce the new mayor and the new executive committee of the Msunduzi at a full council meeting,” he said.
