Mayor ‘politicised’ housing lists

2012-10-22 00:00

INKATHA Freedom Party alleges that Mthonjaneni (Melmoth) mayor has politicised a beneficiary list for a government housing project.

IFP ward councillor Eric Masikane alleged that mayor Maureen Ndlangamandla pitched up in the Thubalethu area at a housing registration process wearing an ANC T-shirt. “We believe she was trying to say to beneficiaries, ‘the ANC is giving you the houses’. She even set up a stand and started distributing registration documents,” said Masikane.

When asked for comment, the mayor’s spokesperson, André Els, said the registration period is “ongoing” and that “If anyone has proof of fraud taking place, they should lay a charge”.

Masikane said there are strict rules that govern the behaviour of officials to ensure housing is handed out according to the allocation criteria.

“The mayor disrespected the rule that the ward representative and other agreed-on parties oversee the process. The process requires that residents applying for houses fill in official forms, which are then certified at the police station.

“The forms are given to the Department of Human Settlements to ensure that the applicants have not already been given government-funded houses.

“The mayor brought her own forms and a photocopier and charged people for the copy. This is not right,” said Masikane.

By yesterday afternoon Masikane said housing applicants were already queuing for registration.
