Mayoral fleet to get six new cars

2013-10-29 00:00

THE purchasing of six new cars for Durban’s mayoral fleet is expected to top the agenda at an eThekwini municipality Executive Committee (Exco) sitting today.

The cars are to be used by Mayor James Nxumalo, his deputy Nomvuzo Shabalala and speaker Logie Naidoo.

Last year, the city was criticised for buying two top of the range Toyota Prados for Shabalala and Naidoo for around R1,5 million.

The DA took the matter to the Public Protector Thuli Madonsela to investigate if the purchases of these vehicles constituted wasteful expenditure. The DA believed that the city could have bought cheaper cars to chauffeur Shabalala and Naidoo around.

Naidoo’s Prado was involved in a collision with a truck on the Higginson highway bridge over the N2 in December. His driver, Nduduzi Gumede, and another man died as a result of their injuries. Naidoo was not in the car at the time.

The city, explaining the need to replace the fleet, said for years the fleet had been neglected.

City manager Sbu Sithole, while not revealing how much would be spent on the new fleet, said the mayoral fleet should consist of SUVs considering the terrain the mayor and deputy travel.

The current fleet includes the mayor’s BMW, which has 400 000 km on the clock. Nxumalo said he was often left embarrassed after the car had stalled and his drivers had to jump start the vehicle.

Three BMW vehicles that need to be replaced were purchased at the cost of R1,4 million, said DA caucus leader Zwakele Mncwango.
