Mayor's bodyguard withdraws bail bid

2009-01-22 00:00

The bodyguard of Msunduzi Mayor Zanele Hlatswayo Nkosivumile Ngukelunga (30), who faces a murder charge, yesterday withdrew his application for bail in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s court. The case was postponed until January 29 to give an opportunity to the senior public prosecutor to peruse the docket.

The reasons for Ngukelunga’s decision not to proceed with the bail application before magistrate Paul van Dongen were not given in court. However, The Witness discovered that Ngukelunga also appeared in the regional court yesterday on an attempted murder charge. In the regional court, he is charged with attempting to murder Mthokozisi Gumede by shooting at him in Caluza on March 22, 2008.

Ngukelunga was granted R1 000 bail by the regional court on March 26 last year. The case was yesterday set down for trial on June 30 this year.

In the present case, Ngukelunga is charged with the murder of Sibusiso Mahlaba (26) on January 4 this year.

Mahlaba’s brother, Bhotsoso told The Witness that Ngukelunga was a friend of Sibusiso. He allegedly shot him after a “light hearted” chat.

Ngukelunga fled the scene, but later returned and took Mahlaba to hospital where he died.
