Mazibuko: Help racists with love

SOUTH Africa must embrace, and not give up on the two models that got the nation talking this week following racist tweets.

This was a message delivered by the Democratic Alliance’s parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko last night. Models Jessica Leandra dos Santos and Tshidi Thamana have caused a stir on social network Twitter with their racist tweets.

Mazibuko said she hoped the two models had loved what former president Nelson Mandela stood for. “I hope that each of them would choose love over hate. We must give them hope that unity is our future, not division,” said Mazibuko, speaking at Stellenbosch University.

“Reconciliation moves us to embrace Jessica and Tshidi with love.” Mazibuko said anger towards the models was the wrong response.

“For many white South Africans, the challenge is to acknowledge that racism does not just exist in the minds of black people, it is a real debilitating fact of life in the country,” she said.

The SA Human Rights Commission said in a statement on Monday that it was concerned about the use of social media to perpetuate racism and discrimination after it had received a number of complaints.

“The commission is currently processing several complaints relating to remarks that Leandra dos Santos posted on Twitter,” said spokesperson Vincent Moaga.

He said they had also received complaints relating to racist remarks that have been made on Facebook. “The commission is urging members of society and the relevant stakeholders to work with it on its educational campaigns to change deeply entrenched social attitudes which result in the persistent acts of racism and discrimination that the country is witnessing,” said Moaga. — Witness Reporter.
