McGregor, Bruss win in sprint finish

2008-01-07 00:00

HANK McGregor and Sven Bruss won the Inanda Dam-to-Blue Lagoon race on Sunday — the final warm-up for the Hansa Powerade Dusi — in a time of two hours 15 minutes 45 seconds.

A field of 650 paddlers arrived at Inanda Dam for the race.

With Dusi partner Wayne Thompson unavailable, Ant Stott teamed with Len Jenkins. These two broke clear of the pack in the exciting rapid-strewn section below Inanda Dam and at Mango Rapid, 15 km from the finish they had a lead of about 60 seconds over McGregor and Bruss.

But an unexpected swim wiped out their lead and the two boats ended up sprinting for the finish at Blue Lagoon. McGregor and Bruss had the best of this by just one second.

A little over four minutes later, Piers Cruikshanks and Jacques Theron won a three-boat sprint for third place from Deon Bruss and Nick Stubbs and Martin Dreyer and Michael Mbanjwa.

Although close together for the first half of the race, the final gap between the women’s race winners, Abbey Miedema and Alexa Lombard, and second-placed Laura Thompson and Robyn Kime was a comfortable eight minutes with another four minutes to Debbie Germiquet and Hillary Pitchford in third place.

Ben Biggs and Andrew Birkett claimed a four-minute win in the boys’ category over Matt Gilson and Michael Hay, with Matthew Shaw and Mathew Dean in third.

Grand master Graeme Pope-Ellis and Rick Whitton took 17th place overall.

On Saturday, Deon Bruss and Nick Stubbs won the Xtreme Bushmans Challenge in a new record time of 1:18:50, shaving 40 seconds off Bruss’s old record set in 2004 with his brother Sven.

Mark Mulder was second four minutes later in a K1 followed six minutes later by veteran’s Steve Botha and Paul Firman in third. Hillary Pitchford was the first women’s boat in fifth place overall, Bean Spearman won the junior race and Craig and Julia Rees were the only mixed double.
