KZN are hosts this weekend of the annual SA Marathon Championships. Racing takes place on Saturday and Sunday at the Umzinyathi Canoe Club course at Shongweni Dam.

The K1 events start at 8 am on Saturday with all the junior classes followed at 10.30 am by the Guppy or U12 classes.

They are followed at 11.30 am by all the Master class events with the Senior and U23 races finishing off the day at 1.30 pm.

Sunday has all the K2 events with Juniors off at 7 am, Masters at 9 am and the Seniors and U23 classes at 11.30 am. There are no K2 Guppy races.

Racing is over a lapped course of 4,2 km with the various age-groups racing different distances from seven laps in the Senior men to three laps in the U14s.

Each lap includes a portage of around 70 m with jetty take-outs and put-ins at each end.

The portages are the key to the race, providing regular opportunities to break away.

Hank McGregor will be starting as favourite in the men’s race with strong challenges from his K2 partner, Grant van der Walt, and KZN Championships winner Cam Schoeman.

All are former world champions, so great racing is certain.

In the woman’s race Alexa Cole, Michelle Eray and Michelle Burn will be the boats to watch.

The championships double as the SA trial for the team to attend the World Championships in Copenhagen in September.

Teams will be selected in all age groups.
