McLaren’s ton hands Dolphins a solid score

2014-12-29 00:00

THANKS to an unbeaten 126 from Proteas discard Ryan McLaren the Dolphins scored 508/8 declared on the second day of their Sunfoil Series match against the Titans at Kingsmead yesterday.

The visitors, in an effort to chase down 359 just to make the Dolphins bat again, finished the day on 107/3, still 401 runs adrift.

The men to take up the challenge when play resumes will be Farhaan Behardien and Roelof van der Merwe on 22 and nine respectively.

The hosts had started the day on 293/4, with David Miller and Morne van Wyk both on 42.

Miller could only add a further eight runs, which included a massive six launched over the long-on boundary — for his 12th first-class 50 — before being run out by the combination of David Wiese and Van der Merwe in the fourth over of the day.

Van Wyk fared no better, succeeding in chipping a good delivery from Rowan Richards to Shaun von Berg in the gully, for the addition of only 15 runs to his tally.

Van Wyk’s half-century was his 36th in the first-class game.

McLaren and Andile Phehlukwayo continued with the restoration of the innings, putting on 66 for the seventh wicket.

When the umpires called time for lunch, the hosts were 397/6 with McLaren on 46 and Phehlukwayo on 31 runs.

The post-lunch session saw the departure of Phehlukwayo (47), trapped in the crease, and his replacement, Keshav Maharaj, faced a mere five deliveries and was also caught in front by the same bowler, Von Berg.

However, when McLaren reached his fifth first-class century, he was like a man on a mission, bludgeoning Wiese and Von Berg for 13 runs in consecutive overs.

Van Wyk, realising the visitors could take no more punishment, brought the innings to a close.

The Titans’ chase started off on a positive note with Theunis de Bruyn and Heino Kuhn putting on 48 for the first wicket.

But that man McLaren was at it again, inducing De Bruyn (30), to play forward defensive to a full delivery, only to find the edge, which was well taken by Miller at slip.

Heino Kuhn and Henry Davids, in an effort to get the scoreboard moving, both edged full length deliveries from Kyle Abbott and Craig Alexander to keeper Van Wyk.
