Mchunu, Bond to face off for DA top spot

2012-02-20 00:00

TWO Pietermaritzburg-based politicians are expected to face off for the position of provincial Democratic Alliance leader.

They are the incumbent provincial leader, MPL Sizwe Mchunu, and uMgungundlovu District Municipality councillor Mike Bond.

Nominations for DA leadership candidates closed on Friday and the party is expected soon to announce the names of successful candidates and the date of its provincial elective conference.

DA provincial director William Goldstone could not confirm Mchunu’s and Bond’s nominations, saying the DA’s candidate list for provincial leadership was not yet finalised.

Imbali-born Mchunu, who has been rising steadily through the ranks, was last year appointed to head the DA in KZN after the resignation of John Steenhuisen. Mchunu was chosen as DA caucus leader in the KZN Legislature after Steenhuisen was transferred to the national parliament. He is the party’s shadow minister of public works.

Mchunu said he could not comment as he had not been officially informed about his nomination.

Bond, a veteran city politician who has been a DA councillor in Umgungundlovu District since 2000, said he had been asked to stand by different structures within the party.

He said he did not know whether his nomination had been confirmed.
