Mchunu’s vow: faster and better service

2009-05-28 00:00

THE new MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Willies Mchunu, said yesterday that in his five-year term he will strive for faster and more effective service delivery and to ensure municipalities are financially stable.

Speaking to the media in Durban yesterday, Mchunu said improving the efficiency of municipalities would restore public confidence in local government.

High on his “to do” list is dealing with the financial maladministration that has affected most municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal.

Mchunu plans to visit municipalities and get first-hand information on the challenges they face and then devise a plan to overcome them.

He said his predecessor, Mike Mabuyakhulu, has told him about interventions to help municipalities that cannot balance their books, but, he added, “there are new reports of municipalities facing similar challenges that Mabuyakhulu did not deal with and they have to be dealt with”.

The MEC said a strategy that emerged from a meeting convened by Premier Zweli Mkhize was for provincial and local government to work together and not in isolation. The meeting agreed that provincial departments should settle their debts, such as electricity, promptly as this would help to ensure that municipalities have optimum capacity to deliver.
