Mdluli hearing in secret

2012-07-03 00:00

A HEAVY veil of secrecy was yesterday thrown over the interal disciplinary hearing against Lieutenant-General Richard Mdluli.

The hearing began yesterday in Pretoria, but national police spokesperson Brigadier Lindela Mashigo would give no information about it.

Mashigo said that the hearing was “not a matter for the media” and “not for publication”.

Mdluli, the former head of crime intelligence, is facing 10 charges at the hearing, including that he:

• Misused secret funds to make R150 000 in improvements to security at his home in Boksburg;

• Paid for an unuathorised trip to China from secret funds;

• Used his position to get his former wife, current wife, son and daughter appointed to jobs in the police;

• Misled the police by saying his wife and daughter had turned down these appointments when they had in fact accepted them;

• Used about R84 000 from the secret fund to buy airline tickets for his wife, children and parents;

• Rented a house he owned in Gordon’s Bay to the police (apparently for crime intelligence use) at R8 000 a month.
