Mechanic pleads for his life after giving attackers R800

A SHOCKED Cato Ridge businessman who witnessed the brutal killing of his client pleaded with their two attackers when they were ambushed minutes after they had withdrawn money from an ATM at the Cato Ridge shopping centre on Saturday.

Leonard Cooper (49) and his client, Keith Lund (67), were at the shopping centre to withdraw money for payment for repairs that Cooper had made to Lund’s car.

Cooper, a mechanic, said, “I gave them all the money and they threatened to kill us.

“I pleaded with them not to. One slammed the car door as if they were going, but he then fired the shots that wounded Lund and I.”

Lund soon died from his injuries.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said Cooper and Lund were at the shopping centre at 5 pm to withdraw money.

A few minutes after withdrawing money, Lund went to the passenger side of the vehicle where he handed over R800 in cash to Cooper and then got into the driver’s side of the vehicle.

Two men appeared from nowhere and robbed them at gun point.

Cooper told The Witness that just after he had noticed the two men, one who was armed with a firearm opened the passenger door where he was sitting and threatened to kill them.

After they were shot Cooper dragged Lund to the passenger seat of the vehicle and drove to his house to seek help, with his arm bleeding.

Jeevan said police were summoned to a house in Club Road, Cato Ridge, and arrived to find the body of Lund slumped on the passenger seat of a red Toyota Avante.

He had sustained a gunshot wound to his stomach.

Both the passenger and driver side windows were damaged. Cooper was taken to hospital for treatment for a gunshot wound to his left arm.

Police appeal to anyone with information about the incident to call the SA Police Service Camperdown detective commander Captain Linda Gcwabaza at his office number at 031 785 1152 or his cell at 082 459 7064 or Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
