Media’s stand on royal household condemned

2015-02-28 00:00

KZN PREMIER Senzo Mchunu yesterday took a swipe at the media saying it should show respect when it comes to matters of the Royal Household.

In his State of the Province address, Mchunu said: “The media must stop capitalising on issues of the Royal Household using the king’s name.”

He said the KZN government had committed itself to ensuring that King Goodwill Zwelithini and his family received the support they deserved.

“We have disestablished the Department of the Royal Household and its separate budget allocation and we have incorporated this function into the Office of the Premier.

“We have also prepared an amendment bill to revise the functioning of the Royal Household Trust to streamline its operation and to improve its functionality,” said Mchunu.

He said the bill had already been submitted to Legislature and the consultation process would commence soon.

On Thursday, during the opening of the KZN Legislature, Zwelithini called on government to investigate damning allegations reported about the Royal Household.

Zwelithini lambasted the media and government officials for “bad-mouthing the Royal Household using his name”.

The Royal Household has recently being criticised for the way that it has handled its finances.
