Medical team at airport

2013-09-11 00:00

PIETERMARITZBURG Airport has been given a much-needed boost in the form of a 24-hour medical response capacity.

This was made possible when the Executive Committee (Exco) recently agreed to have satellite ambulances on site.

The council also agreed that the Emergency Medical Rescue Service (EMRS) be stationed at the airport without paying rent, because the service would also be rendered to the surrounding communities.

This was according to the recommendations to Exco, which called for the approval to be granted to waive the rental income as a trade-off for the service rendered.

Msunduzi municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi said the costs of water, electricity and sanitation would be paid by the Department of Health.

Nkosi assured Exco members that this facility would benefit not only the airport but also the surrounding community members.

Exco also agreed that Nkosi will enter into a two-year memorandum of understanding on behalf of the municipality with the Department of Health.

Democratic Alliance caucus leader Bill Lambert said this was good news for the city, but cautioned the management to hold the Department of Health accountable to pay for services.

“We have had problems with government departments in the past, so when we enter into an agreement with any of the departments we must ensure that we get money for the services rendered,” said Lambert.

There were still outstanding issues of a service level agreement to be signed before the satellite ambulances are set up at the airport.
