Medics on high alert for holidays

2012-12-07 00:00

THE provincial Health Department said it was on high alert to deal with the injured and the sick during the holiday season.

Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo said that with the closure of schools, factories and other industries, major routes throughout KZN would see an influx of holidaymakers.

“The visitors to our province are promised a high level of pre-hospital care by skilled and dedicated staff in advanced life support ambulances.

“On stand-by there will also be two helicopters equipped with the highest level of care that will be utilised to respond to scenes where medical or trauma evacuations are required, especially where road transport would take long and be a risk to the patient,” Dhlomo said, adding that all major roads in all the provinces’ 11 districts would be monitored.

The South African National Blood Service has said it is worried about shortages of blood.

A spokesperson for the Midlands branch, Khulekani Zuma, said: “We desperately need people to come and donate blood, especially around this time of the year.”

The blood service would be at the Liberty Midlands Mall every day from December 15 to 31, he said, and and everyone was encouraged to donate blood.
