Meet PMB’s budding engineers

2011-01-06 00:00

CARTER High and Heather Secondary School each had a top achiever with eight distinctions — Nishalin Pillay and Sakshna Sivnarain.

Nishalin (17), a pupil at Carter, said having a long-term career goal helped him to do well.

“Whatever you do every day has to be in line with your long-term goal,” said Nishalin. He is going to study mechanical engineering at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Pietermaritzburg.

Nishalin said keeping a balanced mind is vital. He played sports and listened to music for relaxation so that he was not only focused on his school work.

Sakshna (17) said her family, especially her teacher father, always motivated her to do well without putting any pressure on her. Her brother was also instrumental in her achieving great results because he was the top achiever in the district in 2005.

“The family upbringing played a vital role in shaping me to have confidence and belief in myself,” said Sakshna. She said fear often holds people back from performing to the best of their abilities.

Sakshna has a bursary from Transnet to study mechanical engineering.
