Meet the Inland cricket selection committee

2008-11-05 00:00

IN response to questions from several readers regarding the names and composition of the KZN Inland senior cricket team selection committee, how it was constituted and what the credentials are of officials holding this office, The Witness received the following response from KZN Inland president Yunus Bhamjee and the Inland province’s manager of playing affairs, Garry Hampson.

“The council of Inland, which is made up of districts, nominate the panel,” Bhamjee said.

Bhamjee is the convenor of the selection panel. He played for Young Natalians for a number of years, represented Pietermaritzburg at school level, has been the president of the Maritzburg Cricket Association for five years and currently holds the presidency for KZN Inland, said Hampson.

Hampson said Michael Patricks, a past convenor of selectors, is also on the panel of four.

Patricks represented Northern Natal and Natal and played club cricket for Orientals and Young Natalians. He was selected for the Sacboc South versus North “mini Test match” and played for the SA Invitation XI. “A prolific all-rounder in his day, he has played a huge role in the development of the game in Pietermaritzburg,” Hampson said.

Inland player/coach Doug Watson is also a selector and has a national level three coaching certificate.

“Doug has played for the Dolphins for 15 years, represented South Africa A and is the most capped Dolphins player and third leading run-scorer for the Dolphins,” Hampson said.

The fourth member of the panel, Hampson himself, has played for the Titans, Northerns B and KZN Inland, of whose squad he is a current member. The KZN Inland manager of playing affairs has, like Watson, a national level three coaching certificate.
