Members: Number too perfect

2008-12-15 00:00

With Cope claiming to have grown a membership of over 428 000 in just a month, there have been suspicions that the figures may have been inflated. Giving ground to these doubts were the neatly rounded membership figures in the organisational report.

For example, the Eastern Cape was reported to have 160 000 members, and the Western Cape 60 000, with KwaZulu-Natal having 10 000. Cope communications head Phillip Dexter confirmed that the numbers were rounded, but said they are accurate in terms of the relative size of each province.
