THERE will be a memorial service for actress, singer and pianist Sindiswa Cindy Ngidi at the Bat Centre in Durban on Friday. Ngidi died last week of heart failure.

Ngidi studied music (piano) at the Durban University of Technology. She had performed with the likes of Xolisa Dlamini, Busi Mhlongo, Nina Mkhize and The Durban Divas. She was also the pianist and vocalist of all-women bands All Gees and Khula, and was the lead singer and manager of her band Cindy’s Afro ve Sense.

As an actress, she had performed in the recent Playhouse production Jimbo and in Jerry Pooe’s production of Sophiatown. She was also the manager of her brother Philani Ngidi, a well-known Durban-based bass guitarist, who has recorded with people like Ernie Smith, Jonathan Butler and Sharon Katz. She also worked as a music teacher at the Bat Centre.
