Merit organisation starts garden at rural school

The aim of the partnership is to help this under-resourced rural school with whatever resources they need.

The idea arose during Shelver's teaching practical experience at

“A few of us were sent to Mpolweni as part of the Norwegian partnership for students to teach in a variety of contexts. When I saw the school, I had to help,” Shelver said.

Members of Golden Key have raised funds that have been used to purchase gardening tools, seeds, dustbins and blackboard dusters for the school.

School teacher Thandi Twala had a dream of creating a garden that not only gives the pupils an extracurricular activity, but also serves as a feeding scheme for the school.

“We are very happy that Donna-Jade has come back to assist us like this. The learners are very excited to get into the garden and start work,” Twala said.

Local charity Gift of the Givers contributed 150 food parcels to Mpolweni, and local business Moosa's gave Golden Key a significant discount on the purchases made.
