Metro status: Msunduzi to remain part of district

2010-02-16 00:00

THE Municipal Demarcation Board has reconsidered its proposal to allow the Msunduzi Municipality to become a metro come 2011.

So said Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Nomusa Dube in conjunction with Finance MEC Ina Cronje, at a press briefing held in Durban yesterday.

“[The Msunduzi] Municipality will, for now until further notice, remain a category B municipality and continue to constitute part of uMgungundlovu District Municipality. This for now puts to rest all speculations around this matter,” she said.

Dube said the board’s decision must be respected by all.

“We want to state up-front and for the record that there was no interference with the decision of the board ... This now opens a window of opportunity for all stakeholders to plan better for an inclusive, viable and sustainable metro,” she said.

Cronje said if Msunduzi were extracted from the district, the areas that remained would not be economically viable.

“Our primary responsibility in ensuring that municipalities function optimally is to the people living within those boundaries,” she said.
