Meyer may have to replace four Boks

SPRINGBOK centre Frans Steyn has the best possible reason for missing the third Test against England in Port Elizabeth — he is getting married in Durban on Saturday.

Steyn, a powerful presence at inside centre in the first two Tests against England, did not travel with the squad to Port Elizabeth yesterday. He recently signed a three-year contract with the Sharks and will be available for their next two Super Rugby games against the Bulls and Cheetahs in July.

But Bok coach Heyneke Meyer has to find a new inside centre and the Bulls’ Wynand Olivier, who came on as a replacement at Ellis Park when Pat Lambie was injured on Saturday, is the obvious selection.

Meyer will almost certainly have to find replacements for Lambie and another Shark, flank Willem Alberts who also left the field injured on Saturday.

Lambie injured his ankle in falling awkwardly when jumping for a high ball and Alberts twisted his knee attempting to prevent England scoring their second try.

Lambie, Alberts and lock Juandré Kruger, who was stretchered of, will be assessed over the next few days when a decision about replacements will also be made.

“Kruger went for precautionary X-rays and a scan on Saturday evening,” said team doctor Craig Roberts. “Everything appears clear,” he said.

But there is doubt in the Bok camp that Lambie and Alberts will be ready, though coach Heyneke Meyer would not say whether they would be dropped.

“The three will be treated by our medical team in the next few days and we will decide by Wednesday, when we name the team, whether they will play or not,” he said.
