Michaelhouse and Hilton close cricket season today

THE oval ball was fast taking over from the hard red one as some schools completed their fixtures last week; others finish with the last today and some will have one more fixture next week, when rugby gets underway at the Wartburg Festival.

The two midlands Independent schools, Michaelhouse and Hilton, play their last fixture in Balgowan and it should prove to be keenly contested. They did meet in a 40-over fixture in the Sunfoil Night League early in the season when Hilton won in one of the more high-scoring games.

Hilton have arguably had a slightly better season, but as the game is on the Roy Gathorne Oval, Michaelhouse may have a slight advantage. The home side players have not been consistent enough, and here Hilton have again done better with Jason Shield and Tom Curran standing out.

St Charles host Westville and the latter will have the confidence of knowing that they have beaten St Charles in a Sunfoil League fixture. The home side were disappointing in their last match against St Johns and they will be determined to make amends and finish the season on a winning note.

Long-standing rivals Maritzburg College and Durban High School meet on the Les Theobald field in Durban. On results this term, College are the strongest of the KZN schools and DHS are low down among the top 10. College should come home with the spoils, but DHS will give of their best and must not be taken lightly.

Northwood at last have a “home” game, but at the Crusaders ground against Glenwood. Their field is still under repair following the World Cup last year where it was used as a practice venue. Glenwood and Northwood have both had similar wins against DHS and lost by similar margins against St Charles. Glenwood have played more matches with greater success, which will make them favourites, in the penultimate matches for both schools.

Selected fixtures (home sides first): Michaelhouse v Hilton; St Charles v Westville; DHS v Maritzburg College; Northwood v Glenwood; Kloof v St Henry’s; Howick v Treverton; Hillcrest v Thomas More; Grantleigh v Kingsway; Linpark v Grace
