Michaelhouse on a tough mission

2011-06-04 00:00

THE four boy’s Independent schools, after a week’s break, will be rejuvenated, something they probably needed ahead of the tough fixtures they face this morning.

Michaelhouse arguably have the toughest assignment against the unbeaten Maritzburg College side, one of the top hockey teams in the country this year.

Michaelhouse were unlucky to lose against their arch-rivals Hilton, and although Hilton did come close against College, having lost 2-3 and playing to a 2-2 draw, visitors Michaelhouse must not be underestimated.

The match at Northwood, where they will be hosting Kearsney, looks to be a keenly contested game. Kearsney have had the best results in the Coastal area and, perusing the results against the three schools they have both played, they will be odds-on favourites. They both beat Clifton 5-2 and lost against College, while against Hilton, Kearsney won and Northwood lost.

DHS have had a particularly miserable hockey season, having lost all but one game and that was a 2-0 win against Thomas More. St Charles also beat Thomas More, but only 1-0. The other two teams they have both played are St Albans, where St Charles drew 1-1 and DHS lost 0-2, and College where they both lost 0-5. St Charles may have the edge on their home turf.

Hilton host St Albans and here again a close game could result. That St Charles held St Albans to a draw and College gave them a hiding the following day suggests that St Albans are not good travellers. Hilton should thus have the better of the game.

Fixtures in brief (home side first): Maritzburg College v Michaelhouse; Northwood v Kearsney; St Charles v DHS; Hilton v St Albans
