Michaelhouse to host Hilton

2014-05-03 00:00

WITH many of the major schools on a break this weekend, one of KwaZulu-Natal’s most anticipated derbies takes place on Meadows today when Michaelhouse host Hilton College.

It is a match rich in history and tradition, and if there was one fixture that both sides want to win each year, this is it.

The home side will enter the match as favourites after upsetting Durban’s powerful Westville outfit in their last fixture, while Hilton are coming off the back of a loss to Kearsney College. In that match, Hilton started the game well scoring two tries to nothing in the first half, but they could not sustain their momentum in the second.

It will be about basics for the Hiltonians today, said their director of rugby Tony Richter. “I have no doubt that they boys will go out there and give 150%,” Richter told Weekend Witness yesterday. “We did well in the first half against Kearsney, and in this match we are looking for that kind of performance in both halves. We have prepared well and it will be about sticking to basics.”

Michaelhouse’s win over Westville showed that they are a side that can exchange blows with the best this season, but Richter is not overly concerned by the fact that his side go into today’s derby as underdogs.

“We are the underdogs but that is okay,” said Richter. “We also have a very young side and that is a good thing for the future. It is going to be an exciting match for them.”

In today’s other match, St Charles travel to Kearsney.

Today’s fixtures: Michaelhouse v Hilton,

St Charles v Kearsney.
