Midlands Mall to build funfair at garden food court

2011-07-06 00:00

BY the end of this year Liberty Midlands Mall will look vastly different. The biggest change will be the enclosure of the Garden Food Court where a funfair will be constructed.

The revamp, which is to cost R50 million, is an attempt to make the mall “more than Pietermaritzburg’s retail gem”.

Thea Marx, Liberty Properties Coastal general manager, said, “The planned improvements are aimed at making the mall the preferred retail centre, which offers entertainment and leisure as part of the shopping experience.”

The Garden Food Court is currently walled off for construction. A Dis-Chem Pharmacy will be added to the area, but the main attraction will be Mr Funtubbles Fabulous Family Funfair.

As glazed roofing will be put up, this funfair will become Pietermaritzburg’s first indoor amusement park.

Marx said the venue will cater for children’s entertainment, children’s parties and corporate events such as product launches and Christmas parties.

The funfair will be open to the public around October or November.

Other areas of the mall are also being revamped.

“In addition to the upgrading of three major entrances, plans to open a new security block are also under way and new public toilets are also part of the expansion plan,” Marx said.

Retiling of some of the toilets has already begun.

A new server room will be built to house the mall’s IT infrastructure.

The upgrade aims to attract clientele from wider areas of KwaZulu-Natal. “The Midlands Mall serves not only the people of Pietermaritzburg, but the surrounding areas as well,” said Marx.
