Midlands, Zingari win their Inland Premier League matches with ease

THERE were comfortable victories for Midlands and Zingari in KZN Inland Premier League action at the weekend, while the much-anticipated match between home side Lancashire and reigning champions Standard at the Michael Patricks Oval in Woodlands didn’t get off the ground after conditions were deemed unfavourable for play.

Zingari had Jacques Pienaar’s devastating five-wicket haul to thank for Northern Districts’ modest 119 all out in Newcastle, Aveer Chandrarakan being the only home batsman to get any measure of the visitors’ attack. Zingari president Harry Brown’s side managed to knock off the runs with a reasonable degree of comfort in their five-wicket win.

Young Natalians took on Midlands at the Maritzburg Oval and managed 131 all out with the consistent Qasim Khurshid scoring 30, while veteran seamer Mark Haselau picked up five sticks. The Eston boys made short work of the target with Inland opener Mario Olivier and the underrated Clint Lock both playing decent innings in Midlands’ eight-wicket victory.

Meanwhile, the University Sport South Africa (USSA) Week in Bloemfontein has seen the University of KZN, a product of the Durban and PMB campuses, win their first two matches courtesy of the Duckworth/Lewis Method.

UKZN are in the second tier of the tournament, so they don’t meet varsity cricket powerhouses Maties, UJ, Tukkies and the like.

Inland provincial players Oliver Humphries and Narvaar Harridave, both from the PMB campus, have enjoyed their time out in the middle in Bloemfontein so far, and it looks as if Humphries is on course to retain his place in the SA Universities’ team to be selected at the end of the week.

December 14 and 15 sees Standard and former KZN Inland coach Robbie Coutts holding a cricket clinic at Wanderers Club from 8 am to 12 noon each day at a fee of R200. For more information contact Coutts at 072 259 9993 or 074 127 3666.

The pick of the Inland Premier League matches this Sunday is arguably the Lancashire/Varsity encounter in Woodlands, the campus-based club endeavouring to maintain their momentum and Lancs feeding off their loyal home club supporters.
