Midlands and Standard in thrilling tie

2008-11-10 00:00

THE talk of the KZN Inland Premier League club cricket circuit is Sunday’s stunning tied match between hosts Midlands and visitors Standard at Eston.

This Premier 60 match saw several cricketers make vital contributions, with Standard’s Kyle Nipper and Bruce Dixon of Midlands standing out with both bat and ball.

Midlands totalled 197, the last wicket falling two balls short of their 60 overs. Former Inland captain Murray Hampson, still a consistent performer in Premier League now that work commitments have forced provincial cricket to take a back seat, top-scored with 71 for Midlands, with Dixon and skipper Scott Hosking making handy contributions. Nipper was in top form with the ball and took five for 21 from his maximum 15 overs.

Standard nearly reached the target, needing three off the last ball, but amid nigh-unbearable tension two runs were what they could manage and a tie was the final outcome. Nipper again led the Standard charge with 66 with support from the in-form Brendon Jones and Andre van Vuuren.

Midlands 197/10 in 59.4 overs (M Hampson 71, B Dixon 31, S Hosking 21, K Nipper 15-6-21-5, T Groenewald 13.2-3-51-3). Standard 197/9 in 60 overs (K Nipper 66, B Jones 42, A van Vuuren 28, B Dixon 9-1-25-4). Match tied.
