Midlands hockey derby could be a spectacle

2011-05-07 00:00

THE number of top school hockey matches today has increased to four in the province, while St Charles have travelled to play St Davids at Inanda in Johannesburg.

Hilton, after their improved effort in drawing with Maritzburg College last Saturday, will host rivals Michaelhouse. Hilton’s record this season does not read terribly well as they have played 14 games, winning just two, drawing two and losing the rest. Michaelhouse have not been as busy having played six matches, winning them all.

The opposition that Michaelhouse have played are probably not as strong as the schools that Hilton have played but the Balgowan lads did score 26 goals with just one against.

Hilton will, however, be buoyed by their good display to draw against College after being two goals down at the break. Hopefully, today’s match will bring out the best in the players in both teams and it could then be a spectacle.

Kearsney went on a successful tour to Malaysia, and have only played four local matches and won all four. Their visitors, Glenwood, have played seven games and have not yet lost. They drew games against Paul Roos and St Andrews. The only side they have both played is Westville and here Glenwood won 3-1, while Kearsney beat them 6-0. This makes Kearsney favourites, particularly as it is at home.

King Edward School (Kes) have travelled down from Johannesburg to play against Maritzburg College. The latter have the better record as Kes have lost against Hilton, Selborne, Grey HS and Wynberg, all schools that College have beaten although they drew the second match against Hilton.

Westville and hosts DHS should be involved in a close game. Neither side has won a game as both have struggled to score goals. A draw is the likely outcome in this match.

St Charles will have a tough match in Johannesburg as St Davids have beaten Hilton and lost narrowly against Grey HS.

Fixtures in brief (home side first): Hilton vs Michaelhouse; Kearsney vs Glenwood; Maritzburg College vs Kes; DHS vs Westville; St Davids vs St Charles.
