Midlands host Lancashire in pick of Premier League club matches

2009-10-16 00:00

ARGUABLY the pick of the KZN Inland Premier 60 League club cricket matches on Sunday sees Midlands host Lancashire at the Eston Country Club, while the focus in the capital from today will surely be on the KZN Inland U19 three-day match against Free State U19 at the Maritzburg Oval.

However, Inland U19 coach Paul Atkins said yesterday that the team is not the strongest available as the four top cricket schools in the region, Maritzburg College, Hilton, St Charles and Michaelhouse, have not made their players available for this match.

The Inland U19 team is: Jens Hillerman, Husain Essop, Suhail Razack, Dustin Chaplin, Sanele Zulu, Chase Strachan, Marcel Frenzel, Kashalin Pillay, Rohan Barron, Themba Mbona, Brad Gilbert and Shandon Carter.

Out at Eston, the Midlands team will be looking to get on the winning trail on Sunday after losing by three wickets to 2008/09 Premier 60 runners-up Varsity last Sunday.

Cricket in the country districts appears to be going from strength to strength, and the Midlands Country Districts League, with five teams participating this season, can only add to the depth of this experienced and highly competitive Midlands Premier League side.

The Midlands CD League teams are Noodsberg, Howick, Mooi River, Eston and Greytown, while Bergville and Richmond are available to play friendlies.

The CD league enables the Midlands side to identify players who perform consistently and reward them with exposure to premier league cricket.

Midlands have quality players to call on in Vaughan Davies of Noodsberg; Garrett Houston, Garth Ratsey, Travis Butler, Dev Smythe, Jeff Haywood, fast bowler and provincial golfer Daniel Greene and Ross Haines (all Mooi River) as well as Darren Mortimer, who captains the young Howick side that ended tied first with Eston in the MCD League last season.

Greytown are the newcomers this season, and could spring a few surprises with Bobby Pearson as captain, who will be assisted by Johan van Rooyen.

The core of the Eston players remains the same, with Bruce Dixon and Mark Haselau along with skipper Scott Hosking, Clint Lock, Kosie Smith and Ant Foster in the batting department. Javagal Dohne, Magnus van Rooyen and the Hampson brothers, Murray and Robert, are the first-choice bowlers. Quick bowler Mark Boast has spent the off-season refining his run-up in the nets and looks to add both pace and bounce to the bowling attack.
