Midlands riders dominate KZN MTB Enduro Series

2015-04-23 00:00

GIBA Gorge Mountain Biking Park in Mariannhill hosted the final round of the 2015 KZN MTB Enduro Series and third round of the Downhill Series at the weekend.

Saturday saw 115 riders vie for the enduro honours in various age groups, the course being four testing stages for a total of 20 km.

It was a solid day for the Midlands riders, Pietermaritzburg’s Hilton Frost being the overall series winner, clocking an impressive 12:29.22 seconds ahead of Hilton rider Timothy Bentley in 12:51. Completing the podium was another Maritzburg cyclist, Jedson Tooms, crossing the line in 13:01.

Despite Tooms finishing third, his effort was enough to see him clinch the overall runner-up spot in the series to Frost.

For the women, overall category and series winner was another PMB star, Kim Westbrook, who had dominated throughout the series. Even arriving at Giba with a heavily strapped arm wasn’t enough to slow her down as she stopped the watch in an impressive 16:51.

Coming home second and enjoying an impressive ride was PMB sub-junior rider Sabien Thies in 17:20, securing her second overall in the series. Third home on Saturday was Kathryn Fourie in 18:16.

On Sunday, it was the turn of the downhill daredevils to take on the clock, with nearly 70 riders pitting their skills on a fast and technical 1,2 km track.

Conditions were dry and dusty and with a few jumps in the mix, spectators, who could see most of the course, definitely got their money’s worth.

Coming out tops in the men’s elite category was Howick’s Samuel Bull who roared through the dust and flew over the jumps in 1:33.42, just enough to ward off the charging Chris Philogene from Westville. Philogene did enough to win the junior category but missed the elite first prize by a mere one-hundreth of a second, his time being 1:33.43. Keeping it in the family, Jonathan Philogene was third best Elite man in 1:33.98.

Maritzburg’s Kim Westbrook dominated the women’s elite race, securing what is now her customary top spot in 2:18:12, ahead of Fourie (2:23.55) and Thies (2:23.88).

For the downhill and enduro riders, the next challenge is the KZN MTB Champs at Cascades Mountain Bike Park in Pietermaritzburg, the enduro events on June 6 and the downhill on June 7, where the KZN champion will be determined.
