Midmar: Victim of drowning came from Newcastle

2011-02-08 00:00

THE man who drowned at Midmar Dam on Sunday was identified by police yesterday as Ntokozo Simelane (22) of Newcastle.

He is believed to have been attending a course in Howick and had gone camping at the dam with colleagues when he drowned.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said the group went for a swim on arrival at the dam.

It is alleged that a short while later Simelane’s colleagues noticed that he had disappeared in the water and they called for help.

Midmar Dam employees found him lying at the bottom of the dam about five metres from the bank.

Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

“It is believed that Simelane may have stepped into [an underwater] gulley in the dam and experienced problems in keeping afloat and subsequently drowned.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated and a postmortem will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death,” said Jeevan.

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife said this was an unfortunate incident and that it has put every measure in place to prevent casualties like this one.

“We have signboards warning people what and what not to do, and people are urged to wear lifejackets when going into the water.

“It is so unfortunate that this man drowned and we appeal to people to obey the rules once they are at the park,” spokesperson Maureen Zimu said yesterday.

She said the last drowning was about three years ago when a schoolboy entered the water in jeans and without a lifejacket.
