Mighty men

2009-04-28 00:00

The Might Men Conference held outside Greytown this past weekend was an extraordinary phenomenon. A crowd estimated at some 200 000 men gathered from all over the country and even beyond its shores to listen to farmer-turned-evangelist Angus Buchan. Last year there were 60 000. Providing for so enormous a gathering must have posed logistical problems of access, catering, accommodation and sanitation, all of which appear to have been successfully overcome.

Psychologists will long debate the motivation behind the movement. A sense of solidarity, a need for certainty, hope and inspiration in uncertain times — all these factors probably played their part. And the message was positive and constructive. It is said that the Methodist revival in the 18th century saved England from a revolution like that in France. A participant claimed that the Mighty Men will “change this nation”. If that is so, it will not be a change for the worse.
