Millions of schoolkids to wish Tata a happy birthday

2013-07-17 00:00

MILLIONS of pupils in schools have been asked to sing “Happy Birthday” to Nelson Mandela tomorrow at 8 am. They have also been asked to pray for him.

Mandela turns 95 tomorrow.

The initiative is driven by the Department of Basic Education and Lead SA.

Mandela is currently being treated at Medi-Clinic Heart Hospital in Pretoria.

In a statement, Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga said the changes people enjoy today are “the fruits of the toil of towering icons the stature of this former statesman”.

“It can only be a privilege for every learner and every citizen to observe in song and reflect in prayer the 95th birthday of our former president Nelson Mandela,” Motshekga said.

She said it is a way of saying“Thank you Madiba”.

The minister has urged schools and their management to ensure that this “important assembly” does not impact negatively on learning and teaching.

Many citizens will also rally and give 67 minutes of their time on Mandela Day — one minute for every year of Mandela’s public service. –– WR.
