Mini-cricket coach sets players on provincial path

CRICKET South Africa (CSA) and fast-food chain KFC, the new sponsors of mini cricket, recently hosted a mini- cricket seminar for coaches at Ingwenyama Conference and Sports Resort in White River, Mpumalanga.

Also in attendance was south coaster, Clinton Moodley.

Moodley started coaching mini-cricket in 1999 on a voluntary basis in Park Rynie. “I have a passion for the game and when I stopped playing I didn’t want it to end there. I saw this as an opportunity to give back to my community,” he said.

“Sports play a vital role in the holistic development of children and create a positive outlet for them to use up their energy. I encouraged young children in my area to become part of the mini- cricket team for two reasons: one it kept them off the streets and two it helped them develop a skill.”

Moodley’s dedication and hard work paid off when seven cricketers whom he coached at development level were selected to play for the province in various age groups. One of the players, Prineshan Pillay, is playing in the U17 division, having been selected to attend the SA Cricket camp week this month.

Moodley was awarded a 10-year certificate of appreciation from CSA in May. He also qualified as a mini-cricket coach and level-one umpire, both endorsed by CSA. He has been appointed co-ordinator of mini-cricket in his district and is now training a coach in his stead.
