Minister wants ‘dry’ state parties

2013-09-19 00:00

CAPE TOWN — MPs and civil servants may in future have to smuggle doctored oranges into state parties if the minister of Social Development has her way.

Bathabile Dlamini wants all government departments to stop serving alcohol at their functions.

The minister said the government must set an example for South Africans and that her department had not served alcohol at its functions these past two years.

“We only serve cool drinks, water and juice,” spokesperson Lumka Oliphant said yesterday.

Transport Minister Dipuo Peters yesterday said it was a good idea to set such an example in view of all the acidents that happen as result of alcohol abuse.

Peters was addressing the media on the government’s plans to reduce road accidents by applying the law more effectively.

It was not clear how much support Dlamini’s proposal will enjoy among MPs. In 2011 Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi rapped MPs over the knuckles for their unhealthy lifestyles.

He was concerned over the heaped plates of snacks served to MPs during committee meetings.
