Ministers’ rivalryturns nasty

2009-11-09 00:00

RIVALRY between Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa and his deputy, Fikile Mbalula, took a nasty turn when national Police Commissioner Bheki Cele and Mthethwa prevented Mbalula from holding a press conference, various newspapers reported yesterday.

Mbalula was reportedly due to address a press briefing on Wednesday last week, but the engagement was cancelled at the eleventh hour.

The papers suggest that the feud between them is being fuelled by Mthetwa’s apparent insecurity that Mbalula is trying to upstage him.

The rivalry is said to have escalated between the high-ranking ANC politicians when Cele sided with Mthethwa in calling on the media briefing organisers to cancel the event.

One Sunday newspaper said that a police official revealed Mthethwa and Cele made calls for the event to be cancelled and demanded to know what Mbalula was going to talk about,

Police ministry officials alleged that “bad blood” between the the ministers started soon after Mbalula was appointed deputy minister.

Another insider was quoted as saying that Mthethwa is angry with Mbalula for having run up an exorbitant bill during a night at an expensive hotel, while Mthethwa himself spent 17 days in a luxury hotel at a cost of R235 000, the paper added.
