Minnaar matches Steve Peat’s record

MOUNTAIN bikes flocked to the South Coast for the annual Sardine MTB Super Classic and enjoyed racing in warmer weather at the Pont and Clearwater Trails. Winner of the 40 km Classic was South Coast local Burry Stander, who crossed the line in one hour, forty-eight minutes and 57 seconds.

James Reid put up a good fight to take second just under two minutes back (1:50:48), with Andrew Hill claiming a well deserved third (1:51:09). Cherise Taylor claimed the women’s title in 2:12:18, with junior Ashleigh Parker-Moffatt doing well to place second (2:22:31) ahead of sub-veteran Nedene Cahill in third (2:39:33).

Senzo Gumede was overall winner of the 25 km race in a time of 1:26:20. Hayley Smith was home first in the women’s race (1:39:48). The Sub-Junior Series continued to produce good racing amongst the youth, with James Damant (1:27:17) and Mikaela Jonsson (1:37:04) taking the boys’ and girls’ titles.

Event three of the KZN Momentum Health Short Course Series took place last weekend, with Reid taking the win in the A batch ahead of Travis Walker and Kyle Dorkin. Jedson Tooms placed fourth and Evan van der Spuy fifth.

In the B race Julian Jessop led the field, while the girls raced hard with Parker-Moffatt placing second overall ahead of Jonsson.

The series has proven ideal for competitive mountain bikers to hone their speed and skill over short course racing.

Greg Minnaar came third in the third round of the UCI World Cup Downhill Series in the scenic village of Leogang, Austria. Minnaar has equalled team-mate Steve Peat’s career record of 51 World Cup downhill podium appearances.

Tomorrow sees the new Sappi Scottburgh MTB race starting from Scottburgh main beach at 9 am. Registration will be open at the Scottburgh Lifesaving Club from 7 to 8.30 am. The three distances are 42 km Classic (R120), 20 km (R80) and 10 km (R50).

Next weekend is the Heatonville Leopard Classic at the Heatonville Farmers’ Club, Zululand. Entries and further information at www.roag.co.za.

The Time Freight Multisport Series starts next Sunday. Albert Falls Dam will provide the venue for both the first and third events, while the second event will be held at Shongweni Dam on August 21.

The Energizer Night Relay makes a welcome return to the calendar from October 7 to 9 and Albert Falls. Saturday sees two new events: trail runners can take on a brisk five-kilometre or 10 km run first thing in the morning, while the swimmers will have an opportunity to qualify for the Midmar Mile with a one-kilometre, open-water swim. Sunday sees the usual multisport format with the addition of an ultra course (for those preparing for Triple Challenge).

Mountain bike purists will also enjoy the fast and thrilling tracks at Albert Falls in the Time Freight Express 35km, 20km and 10km MTB races. Pre-entries close on Thursday at midnight at www.maxcluer.com.
