Miriam Makeba

2008-11-11 00:00

A South African legend, Miriam Makeba, died on Sunday night while on a concert tour of Italy. “Mama Afrika” was not only one of this country’s most internationally respected musicians, she represented in her larger-than-life personality and vibrant singing an important page in South Africa’s cultural history. She is credited with having brought African music to a global audience. Her involvement with the anti-apartheid movement led to the Verwoerd government revoking her citizenship. Although much of her long career was spent outside South Africa, she remains a revered icon of the struggle and a source of pride to all South Africans.
