2013-04-15 00:00

THE testing records behind a study by Stellenbosch University scientists into the labelling of meat products has revealed the identities of meat products contain a few surprises.

The detailed research findings made available to Media24 Investigations under an access to information law show that these products include:

- Chilli mutton sausage purchased at Bluff Meat Supply in Durban contained traces of beef, pork and chicken; and

- “Quality” braai wors from Grobbies Butchery in KZN, which was supposed to contain beef, contained pork, sheep, donkey and chicken;

- Cheese beef burgers from Food Lovers Market in Westville, KZN that contained the DNA of water buffalo, sheep and chicken – none of which were declared on the label;

- Kudu wors sold at the OK Foods in Cambridge, East London, contained beef, pork and sheep;

- Mint-flavoured mutton sausage purchased at an East London Fruit & Veg City also containted beef and pork;

- Mince bought from an unspecified 7-Eleven store in Stellenbosch in the Western Cape contained traces of beef, pork and sheep and,

- Beef mince sold at the East Rand Mall branch of Pick n Pay contained traces of pork.
