Mismatches and rain bedevil club cricket

2008-10-06 00:00

THE weekend’s KZN Inland Premier League club cricket encounters were either rank mismatches or rained out.

At the Maritzburg Oval on Sunday, Standard thrashed Orientals by nine wickets, while reigning champions Varsity wrapped up a six-wicket win over Ladysmith’s K&L with the minimum of trouble.

The matches between Zingari and Northern Districts at Collegians Club and Midlands and Young Natalians at the Michael Patricks Oval in Woodlands never got off the ground due the abysmal cricket weather.

Orientals were shot out for 119 by Standard with Kyle Nipper and Alan Briscoe harvesting a collective seven wickets for 41 runs. In reply, Standard took more than nine runs an over off the Orientals’ attack to reach the 120-run target in the 14th over, young skipper Nipper completing a fine outing with an undefeated 41 and Robin Elliott an unbeaten 59.

At the Varsity Oval, the campus-based side made short work of the Ladysmith cricketers, with Jason Kleyweg and Narvaar Harridave picking up three wickets apiece as the visitors tumbled to 49 all out.

Pmb Oval: Orientals 119 all out (Z Cele 34*; K Nipper 4-33, A Briscoe 3-8). Standard 120/1 in 13.2 overs (R Elliott 59*, K Nipper 41*).

Standard won by nine wickets — full points.

Varsity Oval: K&L 49 all out (J Kleyweg 3-23, N Harridave 3-15). Varsity 50/4 in 15 overs (G Addicott 23*, A Mungroo 2-15).

Varsity won by six wickets — full points.

Zingari vs Northern Districts (rained off); Midlands v Young Natalians (rained off); Lancashire (bye).
