A 21-YEAR-OLD audiology student from the University of Pretoria, Gabriella Seekola, was crowned Miss India South Africa in a glittering ceremony in the Durban City Hall on Saturday evening.

Centurion-based Seekola acknowledged her fellow contestants, saying: “All the girls are really beautiful and confident … we share the same attributes. However, we all encounter negativity at times, so I would like to encourage my fellow contestants to focus on the positive messages they receive from those who love them.”

Yajna Debideen (21) who is an audiology student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban campus, was the runner-up and 19-year-old engineering student Soomaya Ibrahim from Phoenix was third.

Some 20 young women from around the country took part in the pageant, sponsored by Nando’s.

Spokesperson Farouk Khan said: “The event went very well … the heart of this pageant is that the girls are given three minutes to showcase their talents.

“Gabriella, the winner, drew a sketch of Nelson Mandela live on stage. And the girls who were second and third did Indian folk dances, which were very good and very polished.”

Among those attending the Durban pageant was Miss India Worldwide Nehal Bhogaita, who is profoundly deaf and the first hearing-impaired woman to win the international pageant.
