Missing: Divers search for runaway last seen crossing Umgeni river

2011-06-27 00:00

POLICE divers have been searching the Umgeni River in the midlands since Wednesday last week for Thokozani Mchunu, a man in his early 20s, who was last seen crossing the fast-flowing stretch of water that feeds into Midmar Dam.

Captain Lolly Moodley said Mchunu, who lives in an informal settlement in Tweedie known locally as “the Zoo”, and a friend were walking in the Midmar Dam resort when they were approached by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife rangers.

“We’re not sure why, but they ran off and the rangers chased after them,” he said.

“The two men ran through one farm, where they were pursued by the farmer. They then ran across the Petrusstroom road and onto another farm. As the manager of the second farm approached them they crossed the river,” he added.

Moodley said the river was very high, and while Mchunu’s friend managed to get out on the other side, Mchunu himself did not.

Moodley said the police are treating the incident as a missing person’s case and are liaising closely with Mchunu’s family.

Anyone with information about Mchunu is asked to phone Crimestoppers at 08600 10111 or Detective Captain Subba Naidoo at 033 239 9330.
