Missing walker found, reunited with his family

2013-06-07 00:00

THE electrician from Vanderbijlpark who tried to walk the 86 km Comrades route without any preparation, in memory of his late brother, has been found.

Christo van Wyk (46) met up with his family in Durban yesterday after being missing for four days.

“He had a spiritual experience. Angels protected him,” said an emotional Bernadine van Staden, a family friend of Van Wyk.

Van Wyk went to Durban on a bus with a group of Comrades runners. He walked the route in memory of his late brother, Johan (47), who died three months ago of cancer. It would have been Johan’s first Comrades.

Van Staden yesterday said Van Wyk ended up in Kloof, where neighbourhood watch members found him where he was sleeping in a storm water pipe under a road.

They gave him food and called his family, with whom he was reunited yesterday morning.
