Mitchell Park set for 2010 ‘upgrade’

2008-05-09 00:00

eThekwini council has approved a R30 million plan to turn Durban’s Mitchell Park into a world-class tourist attraction for 2010.

Plans include cheetah cages, an education centre and programme, organic farm, recycling depot and a "Lost Forest" children’s play area.

The upgrade will turn South Africa’s second oldest park into a "jewel".

A cultural programme as well as upgraded amenities and additional parking all form part of the re-development plans.

The renovations also include the building of new cages for ringneck parrots, an animal care hospital, and a frog-breeding programme.

According to the trustees, funding for the upgrade will be sourced from corporate and private donors, local and international sponsors, NGOs, members of the public and through other fundraising initiatives. The Mitchell Park Trustees and members of the eThekwini Council will be holding an open meeting on Saturday May 24 at 2 pm in the Mitchell Park Bandstand to discuss the proposed upgrade and consult with all interested parties. Curator Karl Westphal can be reached on 031 312 6925.
