Mixed feelings over Christmas blackout in PMB

2010-12-10 00:00

WITNESS readers have expressed mixed feelings at Msunduzi’s decision not to light up the town this Christmas, which will reportedly save the city R380 000.

Comments on www.facebook.com/witnessnewspaper ranged from approval to outrage.

“SAVE THE MONEY!” Dale Stanler typed.

“The Council funded the Festival of Light this year, was that budgeted for? or one is important than the other?” asked Simiso Cele.

And “how embarrassing, PMB is/was the capital city n will b the only city without christmas deco. Times have really changed. So sad n pathetic!” said Shenaaz Karim-Booth.

While some accused the municipality of hypocrisy, saying the money saved on the lights would be used for hefty bonuses and Christmas parties, others offered alternatives.

Said Sudeshni Moonsamy, “Maybe the municipality should have warned people in advance that there were no funds and communities could have done something positive like a fundraising campaign to keep the tradition going and acknowledge this special day.

“Choose to be part of a solution and not the problem,” she added.

Msunduzi acting manager for marketing and public relations, Brian Zuma told The Witness the municipality did not decorate the city for Diwali or Eid, but residents who hope to help light up the city are more than welcome to do so.
