Mkhize names planning commissioners

KWAZULU-NATAL is one of the first provinces to appoint its own planning commission, which boasts some of the best financial, research and scientific minds in the province

The nine members of the KZN Planning Commission are:

• Professor Alan Whiteside — director of health economics and HIV and Aids research department at the University of KwaZulu-Natal

• Professor Bonke Dumisa — former CEO of the Durban Chamber of Business

• Peter Miller — former MEC for finance in KZN

• Glen Robbins — of the school of development studies, UKZN, and expert on regional and local economic development

•Dr Nonhlanhla Pewa — a leading educationist

• Dr N.L. Bhengu — leading expert on economic health, labour and HIV and Aids issues

• Professor Quarraisha Karim — infectious diseases epidemiologist and world-reknowned for her research on HIV and Aids

• Mzimkhulu Msiwa — engineer with expertise in water and infrastructure issues.

• Cyril Xaba — representative of the KZN government

Premier Zweli Mkhize announced the details on the commission while responding to the debate on his state of the province address.

The National Planning Commission was established in 2009 as an agency of government responsible for strategic planning for the country.

The head of the commission reports directly to President Jacob Zuma. Former finance minister Trevor Manuel is the head of the commission.

The Presidency announced that the work of the national commission will be co-ordinated with that of provincial commissions. The KZN provincial commission will focus on strategic planning for the province.
