OVER 1 800 participants took part yesterday for the 8th annual Greater Edendale 10 km Marathon and fun race held at the FNB Wadley Stadium in Georgetown, Edendale.

Crossing the line first in 30 minutes and 46 seconds, Siyabonga Mkonde, won the prize money of R2 500 as well as Lingo Chara in the women’s race, finishing in 36 minutes and 25 seconds.

In the male category Ndumiso Sokhela was placed second, followed by Amos Rotich in third and Bonginkosi Zwane in fourth.

Mkonde told The Witness that he had run 21,1 km at the South African National Championship on Saturday in Pretoria and came second.

“I wasn’t looking to win the Edendale race because of my race in Pretoria but told myself that I can do another 10 km in Edendale,” he said.

The running machine from Newcastle considers athletics as a tool of putting food on the table. “I started running cross-country when I was in school, then I became a marathon runner in 2008 and since then I’ve been making a lot of money out of being a runner,” he said.

Comrades Marathon chairperson, Macdonald Chitja, said the marathon was very successful this year. “The quality of the event and attendents stood out this year. We thank all the participants and sponsors for their contributions towards the success of this event,” he said.
