Mob torches train

ANGRY commuters burnt a Metrorail train after it broke down at the Phoenix Railway Station in Durban yesterday.

Metrorail spokeswoman Thandi Mkhize said the problem started when a Stanger-bound train experienced technical problems and was delayed at Effingham station.

The train then proceeded to Phoenix station, where it waited for technicians to attend to the problem.

“As the train was already running behind schedule, commuters got agitated and set the train alight,” she said.

For safety reasons, the power was turned off and this caused further delays.

“Nobody was injured and buses were called in to transport customers,” she said.

Mkhize said that police were called in and a case of arson is being investigated.

“We urge anyone with information to report it to the police or our Protection services 24-hour toll-free line 080 131 0149,” she said.
